How can hypnotherapy help you?

Hypnotherapy has been shown to be an amazingly effective technique in combating certain psychological and behavioural issues. Some conditions particularly susceptible to work with hypnosis are:

Overcoming phobias

Because hypnotherapy is exceptionally useful in helping us re-evaluate past events, and change our emotional reacts to them, hypnotherapy has been shown to be very effective at helping people overcome phobias. Most phobias - irrational levels of fear response to particular situations - are caused by one or more past events that the subconscious mind has failed to deal with effectively. Hypnotherapy techniques can uncover these experiences and help emotional healing so that they no longer have such dramatic effects on present emotional responses and actions.

Quitting smoking

Stress management

Hypnotherapy has been proved, time and again, to be enormously effective at reducing, and managing, stress. Stress continues to be linked to more and more healthy problems, as well as having the general effect of reducing our enjoyment of life. Hypnotherapy can not only be used to reduce stress reactions in the specific situations we have to confront, but through techniques like self hypnosis it can make a permanent change to the way we deal with life, and how we feel each and every day.

Skin conditions

Whilst it can't offer a cure, hypnotherapy is quite effective at controlling symptoms. Most skin conditions have a strong psychological component, and they react strongly to stress, and other negative emotional states. Hypnotherapy can reduce the effects of the symptoms, and also help heal the emotional disturbances which may be making the condition worse.

Insomnia/Sleep disorders

Insomnia, and other sleep disorders such as night terrors and bed-wetting, often have a very strong psychological basis which hypnotherapy can help to resolve. Uncovering the reasons for stress, fear, and the inability to relax can all help lessen these conditions, and hypnotherapy can be used to teach the body and mind new ways of dealing with these problems, offering a way to resolve them.

I.B.S. and digestive problems

A large amount of scientific research now supports how effective hypnotherapy is in helping deal with the effects of I.B.S. (this paper reports hypnotherapy as being effective for 71% of patients). Because I.B.S., and other digestive problems, often have a psychological component, and because they are very negatively effected by stress, hypnotherapy is ideally placed to reduce the impact of symptoms, and in the long term reduce the recurrence of the problems.

General anxiety, nervousness, stage fright and exam nerves

Because hypnotherapy can deal with the root of emotional states, it can be a very effective way of changing our emotional responses to particular situations, and can help improve our general sense of well-being. All of these problems are related to the way we subconsciously respond to particular situations, and how our emotions may lead us into negative behaviour. Hypnotherapy can help deal with any underlying cause, and install positive thought processes increasing general confidence and optimism, whilst reducing fears to sensible, manageable levels. Enhancing creativity/overcoming 'blocks'

Most creative people experience a downturn in their creative output at some stage. However, this may become far more severe leading to extended periods of time where little or no work can be done. Hypnotherapy can address the underlying emotional cause of these problems, examine the states of mind which are most effective for creativity, and help 'fire up' the imagination with creative visualisation, finding methods to access our natural subconscious inspiration. As well as helping with specific blocks, there are a number of techniques which can help to enhance creativity in a more general sense, even when there is no specific problem to deal with.

Anorexia, Bulimia and other eating disorders

Eating disorders are enormously complicated and difficult problems for individuals to overcome. However, hypnotherapy is becoming an increasingly valuable therapeutic tool for dealing with these severe problems. Hypnotherapy offers the means to evaluate and heal the emotional background to these conditions, as well as helping to install more positive thought processes, help remove destructive habits, and give clients a more positive, optimistic, mind frame with which to deal with the world.

Habit removal - overcoming nail biting, procrastination, hair pulling, etc.

Habits are patterns of behaviour deeply routed in the unconscious mind. It can take considerable effort and conscious attention to overcome, and re-write, habits. Hypnotherapy offers techniques which deal with the unconscious mind directly, so that old habits and behaviour patterns can be re-written in a more positive and life enhancing way.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

OCD is a very complex problem that all therapies have difficulty in dealing with. However, in conjunction with more conventional counselling, hypnotherapy can help a sufferer install better thought processes, reduce the anxiety that leads to compulsion, and learn to manage their own disorder. It can also be an excellent method of reviewing, and healing, the incidents in life that may have lead to the emergence of OCD in the first place.

Overcoming the effects of past trauma

Traumatic events from the past can often have a major effect on how we feel, act, and live our lives in the present. Hypnotherapy offers a range of techniques and tools to help us reassess past experiences, and change the emotional impact that they have on us in the present. While we might not be able to change the past, we can change the way our past affects us, freeing ourselves from trauma, and healing the hurt that we may still carry with us.

Pain management

The relaxation that can be gained through hypnotherapy, and the correct use of direct suggestions, can have a profound affect on our experience of physical sensations including pain. For a sufferer of chronic pain, this can provide enormous relief without the need for powerful drugs, and it is a technique that can be taught to a client so that they can provide for their own pain management in the future. Note: a course of pain management should never be undertaken without the full knowledge and understanding of the client's doctor.
